I do know one thing for sure in all of this – the only person controlling the situation is the addict. When the addict decides to quit, he or she will find a way.

I think Joe sounds like a good guy. I agree treatment centers really don’t work. Treatment is needed for a lot longer than 30 days, three months or a year. The problem with treatment centers is that after treatment is over the addict has to return to the same surroundings. Removal can help in the short run, just to break the cycle. Sometimes a person has to fall so many times there just doesn’t seem to be any hope. Talk therapy and meetings will, in the end, be the answer for most.
