This response from “tired of the game”:

I can’t imagine it ever working. there seems to be not only a physical aspect of alcohol, but a spiritual or psychological aspect of alcohol that makes it seem like a jealous lover. I lived with 2 alcoholics – one for about 6 months, and one for over a year. both found ways to make my life miserable and do everything possible to push me away, while at the same time, begging me not to leave and blaming me for everything bad that ever happened.

Both promised to quit drinking and both asked for my help to do it. Both failed and made my life hell as part of the mix. I don’t think a person without a serious alcohol problem can coexist with an alcoholic because heavy drinking affects the mind and the body. If you really care about someone, can you stand to watch their body deteriorate and their mind turn into applesauce? Can you stand to be someone’s emotional punching bag and watch the person you care most about continuously do things to hurt themselves and those around them?

I don’t think a relationship with an alcoholic will work. I think the other person in that relationship will just take the pounding till they’ve finally had enough and will finally give up.
